Hi all! As most of you know, I had an ostomy reversal over 2 months ago, and things have been extremely difficult since then because of constant, urgent, and explosive "d". I have also had a great deal of vomiting as well.
I went to see my surgeon last week and he gave me a script for Paregoric. It took a while for my pharmacy to order it, so I just got it yesterday. For those of you who are not familiar with this med, here is the brief. It is a liquid med that combines 2mg morphine and 45% alcohol per one teaspoon. Yikes!!! I choose not to drink alcohol and was concerned about taking something that is apparently the equivalent of 90 proof alcohol. However, pain is an excellent motivator, so I took two teaspoons yesterday (my RX is for 4 per day). The taste is a vile combo of licorice and alcohol. NASTY!!! But, I have to admit that yesterday was the first day since my surgery that I have been able to eat a small meal without running to the restroom during and afterwards. Does anyone have any experience with this med? I have my current one month bottle and one additional refill. Anyone know how long a Crohn's Disease patient generally takes this med? Has anyone used this med with a family history of addiction? This morning I was awakened after only about 3 hours of sleep (as opposed to my usual 9ish) to begin my potty party. After spending 3 hours in the bathroom, I took a dose. I think I am fairly qualified to understand the pain/humiliation/lowered quality of life (QOL) that CD causes, but if at all possible, I would prefer to take a med that would work as well as this for "d" without the alcohol. Any suggestions?
FYI, I do take cough syrup (with alcohol) as needed (prob a few times a year) with no alcohol issues and I also use mouthwash that has alcohol in it with no problems. By the way, if anything, the taste and feel of this med reaffirms my decision to not drink alcohol, so that is not a present issue, though I do want to be very cautious with this med. If you have any experience with this drug, please reply. Thanks in advance! Beth
