An Ode to Roughage: By Lorri H
Oh! Beloved broccoli! Roasted, steamed, or sauced, And mounds of lovely lettuce with dressing gently tossed, Crudités quite splendidly arranged upon the plate, What would I give if in these I could partake!
Radiant is the color of ripened beefsteak tomatoes Lustrous are the hues of corn and portobellos Golden kernels linked with strands so silken and white Oh! How I long for even just one tiny bite!
And lo! How the Macintosh and Cortlands crack and crunch As those contented orchard goers upon them neatly munch. The Ginger Gold, the Northern Spies, Delicious and McGowans Are yet forbidden fruit to me – no longer an allowance!
Carrots, zucchini, and green beans – overcooked Canned fruit and overripe bananas by the foot All good food perhaps, but boring nontheless; When that’s all that can be chosen, they get monotonous. Someday, maybe, on some cauliflow’r I’ll nosh Or on bouquets of broccoli – roasted, steamed, and sauced.
